Takeaways from Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 away win over Werder Bremen
Julian Brandt makes his return
Julian Brandt is back! Although he was only brought on in the 90th minute it is still great news for Dortmund. Ever since his switch to central midfield Brandt has been the engine behind Borussia Dortmund’s transition game. Dortmund have mostly been able to deal with the loss of Brandt in recent games with the emergence of Emre Can but today’s game is a perfect example of the job Brandt does. For a lot of the game, especially the first half, Dortmund weren’t able to get the ball from the defence to the attacking players. Had Brandt been able to start, he would have been the one making that happen. His pace and ball control allows him to skip past opposing presses with relative ease to open up the field for Dortmund’s attackers.
With Marco Reus still injured and some key games in the coming weeks, Brandt’s return is a massive boost for Dortmund. Having him back for the second leg of the PSG clash, along with Marco Verratti being suspended could shift the match into Dortmund’s favor. Even though it was only a few minutes, it was very important to see him back available in the squad.
