Previous Meeting: SC Freiburg 2-2 Borussia Dortmund

These two teams played out a 2-2 draw the last time they met. Lucien Favre made the brave decision of dropping Jadon Sancho, and saw his team get off to a great start courtesy of Axel Witsel’s stunning volley.

Dortmund paid the price of failing to add to their lead though, as Luca Waldschmidt equalised for the home side soon after the start of the second half.

The equaliser prompted Favre to bring on Jadon Sancho. And the Englishman made an immediate impact, assisting Achraf Hakimi to help the Black and Yellows regain the advantage.

But with Dortmund happy to sit back and defend, Freiburg applied the pressure and got their reward in the 90th minute when Manuel Akanji inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net, making it 2-2.

The points were shared, and questions were raised about Borussia Dortmund’s mentality as well as Lucien Favre’s future. Both the fans and the club will be hoping for a better result against Freiburg this time around.
