Bundesliga Roundup: Borussia Dortmund gain ground as RB Leipzig drop points
Borussia Dortmund picked up three crucial points in a 1-0 win against Freiburg on Saturday on match day 24 in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund squeaked a 1-0 win over Freiburg on Saturday to keep pace with Bayern Munich in the title race. Jadon Sancho was the lone goal scorer in this one as Dortmund struggled to find the back of the net and assert their dominance. Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hertha Berlin battled out an exciting 3-3 draw in the Friday game. Dusseldorf jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half through a Kenan Karaman brace and another goal by Erik Thommy. However the second half as they roared back with three goals of their own. Berlin stormed back with 3 goals in 11 minutes, an Erik Thommy own goal and Matheus Cunha & Krzystof Piiatek were the other scorers.
Borussia Monchengladbach pulled out a 3-2 victory over Augsburg on Saturday. Jumping out to a 2-0 lead through Ramy Bensebaini and Lars Stindl and they were always leading in this one. Eduard Lowen made it interesting for a little while, scoring for Augsburg but Lars Stindl put Gladbach up 3-1 in the 79th minute. Alfred Finnbogason scored a late goal for Augsburg but it wasn’t enough in the end. Mainz scored a couple early goals through Robin Quaison and Karim Onisiwo early on against Paderborn and that was enough to seal their 2-0 win.
Bayern Munich cruised to a 6-0 win over Hoffenheim, Bayern scored early and often, notching 4 goals in the first half. This one was never close and Bayern kept their lead over Dortmund in the Bundesliga table intact. FC Koln crushed Schalke’s Saturday with a 3-0 drubbing as Schalke’s poor stretch of form continues. Sebastiaan Bornauw, John Cordoba and an Alexander Nubel own goal made the difference for Koln.
The Sunday games were both back and forth games that ended in draws, first up was Union Berlin and Wolfsburg playing out a 2-2 draw. Union Berlin jumped out to a 2-0 lead through Sebastian Andersson and Marvin Friedrich before Yannick Gerhardt and Wout Weghorst drew the away side level. Neither RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen were able to grab all three points in their meeting.
A couple quick first half goals were all there was in this one, with Leon Bailey putting Leverkusen up initially, only for 3 minutes before Patrick Schick answered for Leipzig. Leipzig drawing brings them within reach of Dortmund, now only ahead of them by one point.
