Julian Brandt (5/10)

Julian Brandt did not have his best game, playing further up the field in more of an attacking role he didn’t have the same opportunity to shine as he does in central midfield. He doesn’t see the ball as much when he’s up top and that’s a key part of Brandt’s game. When he plays in central midfield he is Dortmund’s transporter of the ball. His ability to turn Dortmund from defense to attack instantaneously is his greatest strength. Hopefully he is back in central midfield in his next start as he is much better suited for that role than an attacking winger.

Thorgan Hazard (8/10)

Hazard was Dortmund’s best player today, not only just opening the scoring on an exceptional curling left-footed finish but he was all over the pitch. He was absolutely relentless in his pressure and created turnover after turnover on the Gladbach defense. He nearly scored a second as well, but Yann Sommer made an incredible outstretched save on his header.

Erling Haaland (6/10)

Haaland was kept off the scoring sheet in this one but he still found ways to make an impact without scoring. He sent Hazard in on a half break for Dortmund’s first goal, grabbing his first assist for Borussia Dortmund. His work rate is what sets him apart from so many other strikers, not only offensive pressure but tracking back as well. He sprinted back probably 60 yards on one occasion when he saw Hazard, Brandt, Can and Witsel all get caught too high to provide much needed back pressure and cover.

He missed an excellent chance late on, but luckily it didn’t end up costing the team.
