Lucien Favre’s future at Borussia Dortmund has once again been thrown into doubt, with reports claiming that he could be sacked if he fails to deliver the Bundesliga title this season.

Lucien Favre has already come in the firing line on a number of occasions this season, with Borussia Dortmund already out of the DFB Pokal and the UEFA Champions League. The Black and Yellows are still in the Bundesliga title race, but they lie four points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.

According to SportBILD, the Borussia Dortmund hierarchy have doubts over Favre’s ability to lead the team to titles. And failure to win the Bundesliga title this season could mark the end of his tenure at the club.

The 62 year old, who became Borussia Dortmund head coach in 2018, has done a good job of getting the club back into the title picture. But he has often been criticised for the team’s inconsistent performances, defensive lapses and his passive tactics.

SportBILD have named four candidates to take over in the event Favre does get sacked. But none of them are considered to be perfect options.

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag remains a candidate to take over, but the BVB bosses reportedly have doubts about his tactical compatibility with the squad. They also have doubts about the ability of former Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac.

Mauricio Pochettino is available after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur last year, but SportBILD say that his salary demands and his lack of German speaking skills make him an unrealistic option for the club. Julian Nagelsmann is another coach the Dortmund bosses like, but he does not have an exit clause in his RB Leipzig contract, which runs until 2023.
