Huge news coming out of Germany today with reports of Broadcaster Sky willing to pay a large installment of the TV deal money with the Bundesliga suspended.

SPIEGEL are reporting that TV broadcaster Sky and the German Football League (DFL) have reached an agreement that will see a massive installment of the TV deal be paid regardless of the Bundesliga being suspended. With the Bundesliga currently on pause the DFL has lost hundreds of millions in TV revenue that will greatly impact the clubs in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. Without that revenue a lot of the smaller clubs would take a huge step back financially.

The reports suggest that Sky is set to pay between 270 and 280 million euros in this installment, and although there is no official announcement this is fantastic news for German football. This will significantly mitigate the losses clubs would have surely felt this year and even in coming years. Without these funds, Kicker reported that as many as 13 clubs from the top two divisions could become insolvent. If that were to happen it would have been a massive blow to the quality of the German league now and for years to come.

Although the instalment won’t be the full amount the clubs would have received had the season been completed normally, it provides much needed security for clubs who were on the verge of potential bankruptcy in the short term. It remains to be seen if the German League will resume, with talk of a May return still in the air.

If the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga do return, they could potentially bring in close to if not the full amount of the TV revenue that was expected at the beginning of the season. That would be a massive win for German football considering the state of things.
