Borussia Dortmund have not yet written off Nico Schulz and are planning to give him another chance to stake a claim for a regular starting berth next season.

Nico Schulz joined Borussia Dortmund from TSG Hoffenheim last summer for a fee of 25 million euros after impressing under Julian Nagelsmann. But despite the high transfer fee, he has not been able to live up to the hype at the Westfalenstadion so far.

However, Borussia Dortmund are not ready to give up on the left-back just yet. According to Kicker (H/T: fussballnews), Schulz will be given the chance to develop into the team’s first choice left-back/left wing-back next season.

Schulz started the season as Borussia Dortmund’s first choice left-back, but after failing to impress, he was quickly benched in favour of Raphael Guerreiro. His limited impact going forward and defensive mistakes irked many. And his progress was also halted due to a foot injury, which ruled him out for almost a month.

Schulz told Ruhr Nachrichten, “I only know that I didn’t play the best football I can play at BVB in the first few months. Now I have to stay tuned. I am self-critical enough and now I just want to do better.”

The German international has been limited to just 15 appearances so far this season, scoring one goal in the process. His last Bundesliga appearance came all the way back in December against former club Hoffenheim.

Schulz signed a five year deal when he joined Borussia Dortmund last summer. So he still has plenty of time to show what he is capable of. After the season he is having, combined with the financial uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is very unlikely that the Black and Yellows will be able to recoup the money they spent on him.
