Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan was a tough loss when he left Borussia Dortmund in 2016. He went the same summer as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mats Hummels and I think Gundogan was the worst loss for Dortmund out of the three. He instantly became the engine in Dortmund’s midfield during his first season with the club, helping them win the 2011/2012 double. Dortmund’s midfield really hasn’t been the same since Gundogan left, until maybe now.

Gundogan moved with Pep Guardiola to Manchester City in 2016 and he has been there ever since. He was always going to leave Dortmund in the end but he was always thoughtful of the club even on the way out. He signed one last extension just before leaving to ensure Dortmund received a transfer fee and he wasn’t leaving on a free.

Kevin Großkreutz

Kevin Großkreutz lived every kids childhood dream of playing for his home town club. Born and raised in Dortmund, Großkreutz went from the yellow wall to playing in front of it. Because of that he always had such a strong connection to the Dortmund fans and still remains one himself today.

Großkreutz has been on a decline ever since leaving Dortmund, and it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Moving from Galatasaray to Stuttgart to Damstadt to finally KFC Uerdingen, where he plays now in the third division.
