Borussia Dortmund and the rest of the Bundesliga could be back on May 9th, with the DFL set to meet on Thursday to discuss the possibility.

The DFL is set to virtually meet with the executives of the Bundesliga on Thursday to discuss the possibility of a Bundesliga return on May 9th. The plans have been in the works since early this week but Thursday marks the first real discussions between both the DFL and the teams. One big discussion point that will be covered in the general meeting is if the Bundesliga is to return, what match day will the schedule return with.

There are really only two options, teams can pick up where they left off or they can play out the matches that were scheduled to happen the week of May 9th which would be match day 33. For Borussia Dortmund, either way they are jumping back into a very intense game. If they pick up where they left off, Dortmund will host Schalke in the derby and if they pick up on match day 33 Dortmund will travel to Leipzig.

A “ghost game” for the Revierderby would be very odd, and there is naturally some concern about fans showing up to the stadiums in numbers regardless, due to the nature of the game.

It seems as of right now, the idea of resuming with match day 33 is gaining the most traction, although we won’t know for sure until after the meeting on Thursday. With teams currently ramping up training, it does seem as though the DFL believes there is a legitimate chance of resuming play very shortly.

The DFL are also planning drive through test centres, with only a maximum of 300 people allowed at any game. There will also be temperature checks at entrance to ensure players’ safety.

In the grand scheme of things it’s somewhat conflicting, on one hand everyone is desperate for sports to return, on the other it becomes a question of if it’s what’s best for everyone involved.
