Will Hertha Berlin make Borussia Dortmund loanee Marius Wolf’s move permanent?
Marius Wolf went out on loan from Borussia Dortmund to Hertha Berlin this year and they now have the option of making his move permanent for €20 million.
It only took three games this season for Marius Wolf to realize that he didn’t really have a place in the match day squad for Dortmund. After being left out of the squad for the first two games and then being an unused substitute in the third, that was enough for Wolf to realize he needed to make a move if he wanted to see any game time.
Marius Wolf was loaned out to Hertha Berlin after those three games, for a fee of 2 million euros with the option of making the move permanent at the end of the year.
Since the move, Wolf has become a mainstay in Berlin appearing in every single game, aside from one suspension. That isn’t very surprising, Wolf is a very capable player he just isn’t quite at the level of a club with Dortmund’s ambition. Berlin and Manager Michael Preetz are clearly very happy with Wolf and his impact, it’s just a matter of the transfer fee that needs to be sorted.
Dortmund’s loan included a €20 million purchase option and now that we are getting closer to the time that could be activated, it seems as though Hertha will be unable to meet that fee. When considering the revenue lost due to COVID-19, it makes it nearly impossible for Hertha to spend that kind of money on one player. It seems as though Wolf could be on his way back to Dortmund this summer to try and fight for a spot or try and find a new team.
Now that Dortmund has switched to the back three with two wing-backs, Wolf would actually be much better suited for that type of role. He isn’t really an out and out defender, but he also doesn’t possess enough attacking ability to play on the wing for Dortmund. The Hakimi role could actually be a good fit for him. If not, Wolf shouldn’t have any trouble finding a new club, the only hurdle will be the fee and his wages. He is more than good enough to play in any of Europes top 5 leagues.
