Borussia Dortmund legend Roman Weidenfeller believes that Andre Schürrle was really unlucky during his stint with the club.

Andre Schürrle joined Borussia Dortmund from Wolfsburg in 2016 for a club record transfer fee of 30 million euros. However, the winger was never really able to live up to the price tag, as constant injury lay-offs and poor form impacted his time at the club.

Roman Weidenfeller, who played with Schürrle for two seasons, has had his say on the struggles of his former teammate.

"“He had a hard time with the fans from the beginning. Luck wasn’t on his side during his time with BVB,” Weidenfeller told Kicker.” “When he scored in the 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League, I thought that could be his breakthrough – but then he injured his knee again in that match, of all games, and was out for weeks.”"

After two disappointing campaigns at the Westfalenstadion, Schürrle was told that he was not part of new coach Lucien Favre’s plans. He was loaned out to Premier League side Fulham. But his fortunes did not change there either, as Fulham were relegated to the second division.

Schürrle returned to Dortmund last summer, before being sent back out on loan, this time to Spartak Moscow. The 29 year old hasn’t been able to make the desired impact there either, and the Russian side have already confirmed that they will not be turning his loan deal into a permanent one.

So Schürrle will return to Borussia Dortmund once again this summer, knowing that he has no future at the club. His contract is due to expire at the end of next season, and Kicker claim that if the BVB bosses are unable to find any buyers for Schürrle, he could be forced to spend next season sitting in the stands or playing for the club’s regional league team. But the more likely scenario is the cancellation of his contract, with Schürrle receiving a severance pay.
