Lukasz Piszczek could be set to extend his stay at Borussia Dortmund, with Michael Zorc confirming that the club will hold talks with him after the coronavirus crisis.
Lukasz Piszczek joined Borussia Dortmund from Hertha Berlin in 2010 and has been an ever present part of the Black and Yellows’ defence over the last decade. He continues to remain an important part of the team, even at the age of 34, and sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that they will ‘talk soon’ to discuss extending his contract.
"Speaking to BILD, Zorc said, “I always judge whether a player still has the necessary strength and willingness to perform. That is definitely the case with Lukasz. Because of the Corona crisis we are not currently holding any contract talks. But we will talk soon.”"
Piszczek started the season in his natural right back role, but was shifted to centre back as part of a back three after the turn of the year. He has excelled in his new role, putting in reliable defensive displays for his side. The veteran Pole has made a total of 29 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, and has one goal and four assists to his name.
Piszczek is also the team’s vice captain, and is an ultimate professional both on and off the pitch. Having his presence and know-how in the dressing room for another year can only be a good thing, especially for the club’s talented youngsters.
Piszczek is currently Borussia Dortmund’s tenth highest appearance maker with 354 matches under his belt, and another season at the club would give him the chance to climb past a number of club legends, including Sebastian Kehl, Marcel Schmelzer and Lothar Huber, in the list.
