Borussia Dortmund have already extended their young American talent, Gio Reyna, but the news of the extension cannot be made official until he turns 18.

Gio Reyna joined up with the Borussia Dortmund first team near the midpoint of this season and has thoroughly impressed head coach Lucien Favre, immediately gaining his trust. Since the start of the second half of the season, Reyna has featured in every single game that Dortmund has played, including the Champions League. That shows the trust that the young American has earned with Favre, in a very short time as well.

Because of his performances, Kicker are reporting that Dortmund have a two year extension lined up for him. Kicker are reporting today that Reyna’s contract has already been extended to 2023. His current contract is up in 2021 and as an U18 player he cannot be signed to a contract longer than three years. With Reyna’s 18th birthday coming up in November, Kicker report that Dortmund will announce the extension when the highly rated attacking midfielder turns 18.

This isn’t new for Dortmund, they did the exact same thing with Sancho when he was the same age. Three year contract until he turned 18 and then he was extended immediately another two years.

Michael Zorc shied away from commenting on any potential contract extensions but did give Reyna some much deserved praise.

"“Gio is already a very robust player,” Zorc was quoted in Kicker, “The closer he gets to the opponent’s goal the more dangerous he becomes.” – Michael Zorc"

Zorc went on to confirm that Reyna has become an essential part of the team. That’s very high praise for a 17 year old in his first half season with the club. Reyna will finish this season and head into next season with some experience looking to break into the Starting XI.
