All eyes will be on the Bundesliga as it becomes the first major sports league to return to action this weekend.

With Borussia Dortmund’s derby clash against local rivals Schalke set to kick off proceedings, the Bundesliga will without a doubt earn worldwide attention this weekend. Here we look at some of the key talking points ahead of the restart.

The decision to restart a right one?

The most important point surrounds the DFL’s decision to restart the Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga so early. The decision has been criticised from a lot of people, including Union Berlin defender Neven Subotic. The number of coronavirus cases between the 36 clubs have already reached double figures, and last week it was revealed that the entire squad of second division side Dynamo Dresden has gone into quarantine after two players tested positive.

There are still plenty of questions marks, which of course, will be answered in the next few weeks as fixtures come by thick and fast.

The Bundesliga, especially, will be under a lot of scrutiny in the coming weeks. And those in charge will be under a lot of pressure to get everything right. If their concept works without too many problems, it will be adopted by sports leagues all over the world. But if it fails, not only will the DFL come under a lot of fire, thousands of jobs and the existence of some clubs could be on the line.
