Lucien Favre gave an update about injured players Axel Witsel, Emre Can, Dan Axel Zagadou, Marco Reus, Nico Schulz and Gio Reyna after Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Schalke 04.
Borussia Dortmund were without a number of key players for the game against Schalke, as Axel Witsel, Emre Can and Nico Schulz joined Marco Reus and Dan Axel Zagadou on the sidelines. While Gio Reyna was initially named in the starting line-up, he too was ruled out of the game just minutes before kick-off, after injuring himself during training.
Head coach Lucien Favre provided an update on all his injured stars after Borussia Dortmund’s comprehensive 4-0 win over rivals Schalke. And while midfielders Axel Witsel and Emre Can should be back in the team soon, defender Dan Axel Zagadou will not be playing again this season.
Zagadou suffered a knee injury in training last month, and was replaced by Manuel Akanji in the side today. While Thomas Delaney and Mahmoud Dahoud replaced Can and Witsel.
Favre also revealed that Marco Reus hasn’t started training with the team yet. The Borussia Dortmund captain has been out since February with an adductor injury.
"“Many teams will have a few players who will be injured,” Favre said. “It won’t be long for Witsel and Can, Zagadou will not be playing this season. Marco Reus has not yet trained with the team.”“He (Schulz) was injured at the beginning and now he’s injured again. He’s not allowed to do anything for two or three weeks.”"
Favre also revealed that Thorgan Hazard, who replaced Gio Reyna at the last minute, had cramps leading up to the game. The cramps didn’t affect the Belgian as he scored and assisted in Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Schalke.”We began training duels quite late. I hope that Reyna has no problems,” Favre added.
While Borussia Dortmund did not miss their injured stars against Schalke, Favre will be hoping to have the majority of his players available in the coming weeks with games coming thick and fast.
