Marcel Schmelzer scores for first time since 2013

Marcel Schmelzer surprised everyone today with his one goal and one assist substitute performance, scoring for the first time since September 2013. The former Borussia Dortmund captain has had a significantly reduced role in recent years, but going 118 games without a goal is still incredible, especially for someone with solid attacking instincts.

Schmelzer finished a great team goal that saw Mateu Morey dribble past a couple defenders before Witsel found Schmelzer with the cross inside the 18 yard box. Schmelzer also notched a nice assist, dribbling through a few defenders before finding Hakimi in open space who made no mistake on the finish. You could see how much the goal meant to Schmelzer and how happy the team was for him.
