Borussia Dortmund and Roman Bürki resumed contract talks two weeks ago, with the club keen to tie him down to a new deal.

Negotiations between Borussia Dortmund and Roman Bürki’s agents had recently stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. But the two parties resumed talks two weeks ago, according to Ruhr Nachrichten. The report says that while there is basic willingness from both parties to sign an extension, no agreement has been reached yet.

Interestingly, reports emerged last week claiming that Premier League side Chelsea are interested in signing Bürki, whose current deal with Borussia Dortmund expires at the end of next season.

Ruhr Nachrichten speculate that the length of the new contract, rather than salary is the sticking point in the discussions. Bürki is nearing the age of 30, and his next contract could be his last big contract in professional football.

Bürki joined Borussia Dortmund from SC Freiburg in 2015, and recently made his 200th appearance for the club. He has largely been a solid presence in goal for the Black and Yellows, but was at fault for Joshua Kimmich’s winner in the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich last week. That goal led to a lot of discussion among fans about whether or not Dortmund should persist with the Swiss shot stopper.

It remains to be seen whether the two parties will be able to agree to an extension, but Borussia Dortmund have no intentions of selling their first choice goalkeeper this summer. Ruhr Nachrichten add that making changes to the goalkeeper position this summer is currently not on the agenda of sporting director Michael Zorc.
