Borussia Dortmund are back in action on Wednesday against relegation candidates Mainz who will be fighting for their Bundesliga survival.

Borussia Dortmund face off against 15th place Mainz 05 on Wednesday coming off a lucky 1-0 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf on the weekend. Dortmund left it to the last possible minute, before Erling Haaland headed home the 1-0 winner in the 95th minute. Dortmund were pretty poor in their last outing, and will be looking to rebound in a big way before they take on Leipzig this weekend.

Mainz haven’t exactly been lighting the Bundesliga on fire since the restart, winning only one of their six games. Although they aren’t in a great run of form, Mainz will be fighting for their survival in the Bundesliga, and will throw everything they can at Dortmund. Currently only three points out of the relegation spots, this game carries a lot of weight for them.

Dortmund locked up their Champions League spot for next season last weekend and from here on out are just fighting to finish top two, with Bayern having won the title on Tuesday. With that in mind, and the game against Leipzig coming up, this would be a perfect opportunity for Lucien Favre to rotate a bit and get some younger players some much needed game experience.

Players like Gio Reyna, Leo Balerdi and Mateu Morey, who have impressed in their appearances off the bench could have a rare opportunity against some lower opposition in a game that doesn’t carry a ton of weight for Dortmund.

Dortmund will still be without key players Marco Reus, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Mahmoud Dahoud in this one. Erling Haaland could be fit enough to start which would be a big boost as he is Dortmund’s only out and out striker.
