Borussia Dortmund player ratings from Mainz defeat: Sancho, Piszczek have a night to forget
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund were outplayed, out-thought and out-fought by a resilient and inspired Mainz side, slipping to a well deserved 2-0 defeat.
Despite dominating possession for the majority of the game, Borussia Dortmund never really looked like scoring, and probably wouldn’t have found the net even if the game had gone on for two more hours.
Mainz took the lead through Jonathan Burkardt after some superb build-up play, that left the Borussia Dortmund defenders scrambling. Lukasz Piszczek then gave away a penalty soon after the restart, and Jean-Philippe Mateta made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick.
Borussia Dortmund were second best in almost every department, as the players simply did not turn up. It is somewhat understandable, considering there isn’t much to play for. But losing to a relegation threatened side in this manner is never acceptable.
The result all but confirms Mainz’ survival with two games to go, while Borussia Dortmund now only have a three point lead over third placed RB Leipzig ahead of the two sides’ meeting on Saturday.
Here are our player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players from their 2-0 defeat to Mainz.
Roman Bürki (5/10)
Bürki made a few routine saves but did not stand a chance with either of Mainz’ goals. It didn’t help that those in front of him had a game to forget.
