First choice Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Bürki has signed a new deal with the club, which will keep him at the Signal Iduna Park until 2023.

Bürki has signed a two year extension to his contract, which was earlier due to expire in 2021. The Swiss shot-stopper will now be staying at Borussia Dortmund for the foreseeable future, and will earn an annual salary of six million euros, according to BILD.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc was delighted to have reached an agreement over a new deal with Bürki. In a statement to the club’s official website, Zorc said:

"“We’re delighted that in Roman Bürki, we will continue to have one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Bundesliga between the sticks. This means we have secured an excellent player for an important position in the long term. It speaks volumes for Roman that he has already kept 12 clean sheets this season.”"

After penning his new deal, Bürki said, “I’m very happy at Borussia Dortmund and I feel the trust placed in me by the club management, the coach and my fellow players.”

The announcement of Bürki’s extension comes six months after the two parties began discussions over a new contract. Negotiations were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to reports claiming that Premier League side Chelsea were interested in signing the 29 year old. But the BVB bosses resumed contract talks with Bürki’s representatives earlier this month, and an agreement was reached last week.

Bürki joined Borussia Dortmund from SC Freiburg in 2015, and recently made his 200th appearance for the club. He has made a total of 37 appearances so far this season, conceding 47 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets in the process.

While Bürki has largely been a solid presence between the sticks for Borussia Dortmund, he has made his fair share of high-profile errors, most recently in the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich. Fans will be hoping to see more consistency from him in the years ahead.
