Mats Hummels: Bundesliga title must always be the goal for Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund picked up a 2-0 win against Leipzig on Saturday, sealing their second place finish in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season with one game to go.
Borussia Dortmund were deserved winners on Saturday, putting on a strong display in a 2-0 win over third placed RB Leipzig. After a very poor outing against Mainz midweek this was a great bounce back game for the Black and Yellows. Had they lost, they would have likely finished 3rd place which would have significantly compounded the disappointment of missing out on the Bundesliga title yet again.
Mats Hummels was very vocal after the game about how good it felt to come back after their tough game against Mainz and put in a dominant performance against Leipzig. However, Hummels was also quick to state his and Dortmund’s intentions of fighting for the title again next season.
"“Bayern are deserved champions, we weren’t good enough. We dropped too many points in the first half of the season, but our second half is pretty impressive – Bayern simply played an even better one.”“Next season we want to move a place higher. The title must always be our goal with a team like this.”"
Erling Haaland scored both goals in the game to lead Borussia Dortmund to victory. Speaking after the game, he heaped praise on 17 year old Gio Reyna, telling reporters that he calls him the ‘American Dream’.
"“He’s 17 years old and what he is doing on the pitch today is amazing. He has a huge future in front of him.”"
Haaland also spoke about finishing second place but also the frustration of coming up short in the title challenge with Bayern Munich.
"“First of all it is of course sh*t that Bayern won, but that’s how it is now and we have to do the best out of it… Now we secured 2nd place and we try to get as close as we can.”"
From that quick snippet you can clearly see how motivated Haaland is to win titles and score goals for Borussia Dortmund. Hopefully Dortmund can keep a hold of Jadon Sancho next season because there’s no telling what a full year of him and Haaland together can do together.
Although this season is yet to be completed, you can see the determination and desire in the Borussia Dortmund players to end Bayern’s reign atop the Bundesliga standings. It will be an interesting summer in the transfer market but Dortmund are sure to be back next season chasing down Bayern once again.
