Departing Mario Götze to miss Borussia Dortmund’s final game of the season
By Tushar Bahl
Mario Götze has already played his last game in a Borussia Dortmund shirt, with reports claiming he will not be in the squad for the season finale.
Mario Götze is set to leave Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season. And he will not get a chance to bid farewell at the Signal Iduna Park, with BILD claiming that the 28 year old will not be part of the Dortmund squad for this weekend’s game against Hoffenheim.
Götze has missed the last four games after the significantly premature birth of his son, Rome. As a result of the many hospital visits and further examinations of the baby, the playmaker turned striker has not been able to train with his teammates, in line with the hygiene requirements of the DFL. The former German international has been training individually in recent weeks, and he has decided against taking part in the final game of the season in order to stay with his family.
Götze has been reduced to a bit part role this season, and has only been on the pitch for a total of 609 minutes. He has scored three goals and provided one assist in 21 matches in all competitions, with his last appearance coming off the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
While things haven’t worked out for him this season, Götze was Borussia Dortmund’s best player in the second half of last season. And no matter where he plays next season, hopefully will see him get back to his very best.
