Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has signed a one year contract extension, which will keep him at the club until 2022.

Michael Zorc’s contract with Borussia Dortmund was due to expire in 2021, but after a request from CEO Hans Joachim Watzke, he decided to stay on for another year. The extension will take his Borussia Dortmund career to an incredible 44 years.

Zorc has been at Borussia Dortmund in one capacity or another since joining the club as a 16 year old in 1978. After making 463 appearances for the Black and Yellows, and winning two Bundesliga titles, the DFB Pokal as well as the UEFA Champions League, Zorc retired in 1998 to become the club’s sporting director. During his tenure as sporting director, Borussia Dortmund have won three Bundesliga titles, two DFB Pokals, and reached the Champions League final in 2013.

"“I personally asked Michael Zorc a few weeks ago to stay on for another year,” Hans Joachim Watzke said. “All of us at BVB are happy and grateful that he has decided to stay.”“Michael is a real Borusse and is ready to continue to take on the sporting responsibility in a challenging phase for all of us, where planning is difficult and developments are difficult to predict. This continuity does us good.”"

The announcement of Zorc’s extension is excellent news for Borussia Dortmund. The 57 year old is considered to be one of the best sporting directors in world football, and has unearthed several talented players from across the world. His shrewd squad planning has helped Der BVB build some really exciting squads over the years.

Zorc faces another key summer ahead as he looks to bolster the Borussia Dortmund squad in spite of the financial difficulties brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

Hans Joachim Watzke also confirmed that conversations with Sebastian Kehl over a new contract will begin soon. The former Borussia Dortmund captain has been the head of the licensed players department since 2018. Kehl’s contract is currently due to expire in 2021, and reports have claimed previously that he could take over from Zorc, when the latter decides to step down.
