RB Leipzig 0-2 Borussia Dortmund: Key talking points from crucial win
Gio Reyna’s first start for Dortmund proves a success
Borussia Dortmund youngster Gio Reyna has been quietly making his mark since January, often coming off the bench and playing the role of an impact sub for his side. His hard work was finally rewarded over the weekend as he received his first start for the club, and notched his first assist in the Bundesliga as well.
Dortmund’s New York born wonder-kid showed once again why he’s such a highly regarded talent. Just as the game neared the half hour mark, Dortmund found space to break away on the right wing. Julian Brandt found himself very quickly on the edge of the Leipzig penalty box. A precision pass found the feet of Reyna, who without hesitation provided a neat little one touch assist to the feat of Dortmund’s goal machine. Haaland converted, much to the joy of Reyna and the rest of the squad.
I think what makes me happiest about this performance from Reyna is that he slotted into the role that Sancho usually plays for Dortmund, and did the job quite well. While its much too early to draw any comparisons between Reyna and Sancho just now, I think that should Sancho indeed leave the club for pastures new, Dortmund have at least one player ready to try and fill, in part, the immense gap that he would leave behind.
