RB Leipzig 0-2 Borussia Dortmund: Key talking points from crucial win
Brandt plays key role in Dortmund victory once again
It would be remiss of me to start this section off by acknowledging that Julian Brandt has been both hot and cold for Dortmund throughout periods of the season, with his brilliant moments thankfully outshining his momentary lapses and poor performances.
Lucky for Borussia Dortmund, Brandt was on form when it counted for them against Leipzig and once again played an immense role in pulling the strings that led to Die Schwarzgelben coming away with all three points. The midfield maestro was pivotal in making the run and laser precision pass that led to Gio Reyna’s first assist and Haaland’s first goal of the game.
Brandt also managed to notch an assist for himself in the closing stages of the match. A precision ball across the box towards the onrushing Erling Haaland saw the young Norwegian seal all 3 points for Dortmund, but it was largely in part to Brandt’s vision that both goals became a reality. Brandt now has 3 goals and 8 assists the season for Dortmund, but his numbers hardly reflect his true quality.
Final Thoughts
All in all it has to be said that Dortmund’s performance against Leipzig was a very positive one, especially considering it was the game that came after their underwhelming performance against Mainz. While the season may be over for Dortmund, it was important for them to secure that second spot to lift morale, as Champions League football was already secured.
With one game left to go this season, Dortmund will host Hoffenheim at home. Hoffenheim have traditionally been a tough opponent for Dortmund home or away, but they should go into the gamer stress free and hopefully play out a win for the fans to enjoy to end the season on a high, and look towards hopefully putting in a more competitive title run in the season to come.
