Number Four: vs Inter Milan (Champions League, 2019/20 season)

As Inter Milan traveled to Borussia Dortmund, it was practically a must-win game for Lucian Favre’s side. They had just lost the reverse fixture 2-0 in Milan, and a similar result on that day would have all but ended their Champions League campaign.

Ironically enough, Hakimi’s most important game for Dortmund came against the team he’s joining. Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Matias Vecino put Inter up 2-0 going into the break. With Dortmund staring at a Europa League birth, Hakimi took over the second half to keep the side alive in the competition.

Despite starting the game at right-back, Hakimi found himself in the striker’s position to pull one back for Dortmund early in the second half. A great team move ended with Mario Götze’s pass across the box, and Hakimi was there in the six-yard-box to cut Inter’s lead in half. His movement to the near post on the play resembled that of a proper number nine.

After Brandt scored to make it 2-2, Hakimi went on to find the winner for Borussia Dortmund. After some patient build up, Hakimi dribbled passed Stefano Sensi, before playing his classic give-and-go with Sancho. This time however, he went for goal instead of cutting it back, and gave Dortmund their first lead of the match, coming back from two goals down.

They held on to win the game 3-2. It was a time of need, and Hakimi stepped up with a man of the match performance to create an unforgettable Champions League night at the Westfalenstadion. It was also his second brace of the campaign, leading the team in the competition with four goals.
