Borussia Dortmund 2019/20 Player Ratings: Goalkeepers and Defenders
Centre-backs
Mats Hummels (8.5/10)
Mats Hummels returned to Borussia Dortmund after three years at Bayern Munich this season and jumped right back in where he left off. Hummels has definitely lost a step from a pace perspective, he is still one of the most intelligent centre-backs in the game.
Combining that with his world class ball playing ability Hummels showed that he is still exceptional in the heart of the Dortmund defence.
Dortmund had a rough stretch of games early in the season where they really struggled to not only score but also looked woeful defensively. Hummels was a life saver in those weeks, as he single handedly kept his side in games they didn’t deserve to be in, highlighted in a masterful performance against Barcelona early on.
Hummels has returned to the backbone and leader of the Dortmund defence, proving his doubters wrong with every performance.
Dan-Axel Zagadou (8/10)
Dan-Axel Zagadou took a massive step forward in his development and role this season with Borussia Dortmund. Although it took until the end of November for him to get a real chance in the starting XI, once he was given that opportunity, he didn’t look back. He became a staple in the Dortmund defence from there on out. His importance become even more evident down the stretch when Manuel Akanji was struggling and Dortmund switched to a back three.
Zagadou is no longer the young and inexperienced error prone player. Instead he has settled into a starting role in the Dortmund defence that has seen his confidence grow with the game time. He is a consistent performer, and a robust defender with excellent ball playing ability.
Zagadou will be looking to take another leap forward in the 2020/21 season and looks primed to do so.
