The 2020/21 Bundesliga season will get underway on September 18, the DFL has confirmed.

A new general calendar for the 2020/21 season has been released today by the Presidium of the German Football Association. The Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga will start the new season on Friday, September 18, 2020. The final matchday of the season is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 22, 2021.

As always, the first round of the DFB Pokal will be played a week before the first matchday in the top two leagues from 11-14 September, 2020. The final of the DFB Pokal is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 13 May.

The DFL Supercup, which will be played between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, will be held on Wednesday, September 30. For the Black and Yellows, this means that there will be mid-week fixtures almost every week.

The upcoming season will also see a much shorter winter break. Teams will end the calendar year with the second round of the DFB Pokal on 22-23 December. And the first Bundesliga matchday of the new year is scheduled for 02-05 January, 2021. The number of ‘English weeks’ or mid-week matches in the Bundesliga has also been increased to three for next season.

These measures are being taken due to a number of factors, including UEFA competitions, international breaks, and the European Championships and Copa América, which are both scheduled to get underway on June 11, 2021.

There is also a possibility that fans could be allowed back into stadiums for the start of the new season. The DFL has confirmed that they are in talks with the Federal Ministry of Health and local authorities to discuss the requirements and framework conditions that would be needed for fans to return to stadiums.
