Michael Zorc has revealed that Borussia Dortmund would like to extend Dan Axel Zagadou’s contract, but no constructive talks have been held yet.

Dan Axel Zagadou is coming off an excellent season, which saw him become a pivotal part of Borussia Dortmund’s defence. His performances have been praised by sporting director Michael Zorc, who believes that the Frenchman has ‘enormous potential’. Zorc also confirmed that the club can imagine extending his contract, but added that he is still in the process of development.

"Speaking to Kicker, Zorc said: “He has enormous potential. We can well imagine that (extending his contract). But we haven’t had any really meaningful conversations with him yet. He still has room for improvement. He needs to work on both his mobility and his resilience. What’s important for him is that he stays healthy at all times.”"

Zagadou was hardly used by Lucien Favre in the first few months of the season. But after the formation switch to a back three in November, the 21 year old finally got his chance, and he took it with both hands to become an indispensable part of the team.

A knee injury prevented him from taking part in Borussia Dortmund’s title bid after the restart, but he will certainly be a key player for the Black and Yellows next season.

Zagadou, who joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer from Paris St. Germain, has two years remaining on his current contract.

Michael Zorc also revealed to Kicker that no final decision has yet been made on the future of Leonardo Balerdi, but added that if his departure suits everyone, he will be let go. The young centre back has been heavily linked with a move to French side Olympique Marseille in the last few days.

Zorc also confirmed that if Balerdi is loaned out or sold this summer, there will be no new signings to replace him, as he feels that the team is well positioned in defence.
