Borussia Dortmund Team News: Nico Schulz suffers calf injury
Borussia Dortmund’s defence has taken another blow heading into the week as Nico Schulz picked up an injury against Paderborn and has had to come back from Germany duty.
Borussia Dortmund’s defence is in a bit of injury trouble and the season has yet to even begin. Both Thomas Meunier and Mateu Morey are currently out with injuries, with Morey likely to miss the start of the season after another strong pre-season. Dan-Axel Zagadou’s knee diagnosis is still up in the air as Dortmund don’t have confirmation of the extent of the injury to the Frenchman. Marcel Schmelzer is also still recovering from his off season knee surgery and now Nico Schulz can be added to the growing list.
Nico Schulz’s case was a bit odd, he left to join up with the German National team on Monday and before the day was over, he was on his way back to Dortmund for rehab. Schulz apparently picked up a calf injury against Paderborn on Friday and as a result was not fit enough to participate in the national team games against Spain and Switzerland over the next week.
This is coming down to the wire with the start of the season just around the corner and Dortmund find themselves in a bit of a bind. Morey’s injury will rule him out for a month, although Meunier did get called up to Belgium’s squad for the upcoming Nations League games, so his injury shouldn’t be a big issue.
Dan-Axel’s Zagadou’s injury front is much more concerning. He has become an absolutely key member of the first team over the past year and Zagadou missing an extended period of time would really impact Dortmund’s season.
