Borussia Dortmund are close to extending the contract of Sebastian Kehl, who is the first choice to replace Michael Zorc when the latter decides to step down.

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, only the final details are still left to be cleared before the former Borussia Dortmund signs a one year extension which will keep him at the club until 2022. Kehl is considered to be in pole position to replace Michael Zorc as Borussia Dortmund sporting director when the 58 year old decides to retire.

Zorc was expected to leave his post in 2021, but after the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to extend his stay by another year in order to lead the squad planning through this difficult period. It is now expected that Zorc will retire when his contract expires in 2022, and Kehl is considered to be the first choice to replace him. However, those talks are not expected to take place until next year.

The 40 year old, who won three Bundesliga titles during his 13 year stay as a player at Borussia Dortmund, returned to the club in 2018 to become the head of the licensed players department. He has earned a lot of praise for his management around the COVID-19 crisis.

Michael Zorc has been synonymous with Borussia Dortmund for the last four decades now, so replacing him certainly won’t be an easy task. But Sebastian Kehl has been working closely with him for the last two years, and (if picked for the job) hopefully he will be ready to take over when the time comes.
