Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou does not require knee surgery

Dan-Axel Zagadou will miss the start of the new season, but the worst case scenario has been avoided as he does not require knee surgery.
Zagadou suffered a knee injury during Borussia Dortmund’s training camp in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland over two weeks ago. While the seriousness of the injury is still unclear, it has been confirmed by Michael Zorc after an examination conducted by a specialist that the Frenchman does not require surgery on his injured knee.
“Zagadou can be treated conservatively. The worst case, an operation, is not required,” Zorc told Kicker.
It still remains to be seen just how long Zagadou will be out for. Borussia Dortmund have not given a timeline for his return. Zorc assured that the defender will not be out for several months, but also said that his injury won’t be healed in a matter of a few days. Kicker report that the 21 year old will certainly not be back in time for his team’s Bundesliga opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach on September 19.
Despite Zagadou’s injury, Borussia Dortmund will not be entering the transfer market to sign a new defender, Michael Zorc has confirmed. The Black and Yellows only have two fit specialist centre-backs in their ranks at the moment, but Zorc said that “economic reasons dictate non-action”. Lukasz Piszczek and Emre Can are both also capable of playing at the back, and it will be interesting to see what pairing Lucien Favre decides to go with for the start of the season.
Zagadou made a total of 22 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund last season, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
