Right Centre Back: Emre Can

Emre Can made a big impact after joining Borussia Dortmund in January. With his move now permanent, Can looks set to play a key role for his team this season. Thanks to his versatility, the 26 year old’s exact job description could change from game to game.

If he plays in the middle of the park, Can can be Borussia Dortmund’s midfield enforcer, shielding the back four, doing all of the team’s dirty work, and making late forward runs to score crucial goals as he did last season.

If Lucien Favre decides to play him in the back three, the German international can use his physicality as well as his ability to play the ball out from the back and find forward passes to help with the build-up play.

Using him as a centre-back in a back four would be a step too risky though, as pre-season showed us. Lukasz Piszczek is another potential candidate for that right centre-back spot. And we will likely see Can and Piszczek play in this role, at least until Dan Axel Zagadou is back from injury.
