Borussia Dortmund internationals: Guerreiro stars as Witsel, Hazard beat Delaney
By Tushar Bahl
Five Borussia Dortmund players in action for their respective teams on Saturday, and four of them celebrated wins.
Jadon Sancho started for England in their early kick-off against Iceland, as they celebrated a narrow 1-0 win courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s 91st minute penalty. Sancho was substituted in the 73rd minute after England were reduced to ten men when Kyle Walker was sent off. The Borussia Dortmund forward caused the Iceland defenders a lot of problems before going off as England began their Nations League campaign with a win.
In the same group, Belgium enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over Denmark. Three Borussia Dortmund players were involved as Axel Witsel and Thorgan Hazard started for Belgium, and Thomas Delaney was named in Denmark’s XI. Thomas Meunier was an unused substitute for the Red Devils as he continued his recovery from injury. Thorgan Hazard once again played at left wing-back, while Witsel and Delaney battled in the middle of the park. Goals from Jason Denayer and former Dortmund target Dries Mertens gave Belgium the win.
Meanwhile, Raphael Guerreiro got an assist as last year’s winners Portugal got their Nations League campaign off to a flying start with a 4-1 win over Croatia. Guerreiro’s assist was a thing of beauty as he sent Diogo Jota clear on goal with gorgeous dinked ball after playing a nice one-two with him. João Cancelo, João Felix and André Silva also got on the scoresheet for Portugal.
Emre Can, Julian Brandt and Manuel Akanji could all be in action on Sunday as Germany take on Switzerland.
