As Borussia Dortmund prepare for the first game of the new season, we look at the key takeaways from pre-season for Lucien Favre’s side.

Borussia Dortmund had a mixed pre-season in terms of performances, as head coach Lucien Favre tried out a return to the back four before switching back to the three chain system. Results varied from the 11-2 thrashing of Austria Wien, to a 3-1 defeat to VfL Bochum. But following their 2-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam, confidence is high in the Dortmund camp heading into the new season.

It has certainly been an eventful month for the Black and Yellows. Lucien Favre had his entire squad available to him for the majority of pre-season. And as a result, the team was able to lay a strong foundation with intense training sessions, first in Bad Ragaz and then in Dortmund.

There were a number of standout performers, including new signing Jude Bellingham, as well as Gio Reyna. While Marco Reus made his long-awaited return and scored a stunning solo goal in the final game of Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season.
