Three things we learned from Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season games

Gio Reyna and Jude Bellingham lead the way as youngsters impress

Borussia Dortmund used a total of 37 players across the seven pre-season games they played, with a number of youngsters from the U-23s and U-19s team being called up to feature. And Lucien Favre will certainly have been impressed with what he saw on the pitch from them, as a number of youngsters were able to showcase their quality and potential.

Gio Reyna, who enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign last season, showed that he is ready for a bigger role in the team by scoring four goals in four appearances. Playing in the number ten role, the 17 year old was ever-present during pre-season with his intricate passing, excellent link-up play and composed finishing.

New signing Jude Bellingham also made an excellent impression during pre-season, showing the dynamism and attacking instinct that Borussia Dortmund’s midfield has long been lacking. The England U-21s international had three assists to his name, and also scored one goal. But more importantly, he looked confident on the ball and wasn’t afraid to make forward runs to help out the attack.

A number of other youngsters also showed a good account of themselves, including Youssoufa Moukoko, Immanuel Pherai, Ansgar Knauff, Taylan Duman and Maximilian Hippe. The future is certainly bright for Borussia Dortmund.
