Borussia Dortmund will have a women’s team starting from the 2021/22 season, and they will start from the eighth division of German football.

It has been a long time coming, but Borussia Dortmund have finally confirmed that they will be forming a women’s team which will start playing from the 2021/22 season. The team will play in the Kreisliga B next season, the eighth division of German football. The aim is to climb up the divisions and earn promotion to the Bundesliga within the next decade.

Borussia Dortmund are currently the most prominent club in Europe not to have a women’s team. But on Thursday the club announced their intention to have a women’s team starting from next season.

The decision comes after pressure from fans, club members and players from other teams. During the game against Paderborn last season, Borussia Dortmund fans raised a banner saying, “Football is for everyone: Women’s team now.” Germany captain and Borussia Dortmund supporter Alexandra Popp has also previously called for the Black and Yellows to have a women’s team, saying that she would love to join the club if the opportunity arose.

Now Borussia Dortmund finally have a women’s team, and the department of women’s football will be headed by Svenja Schlenker, according to Ruhr Nachrichten. Schlenker has been with the club since 2007. More details on the project will be made available later this year.

The club have plans to approach the department with great ambition, but they will not look to achieve their goals at the expense of other clubs in the region, managing director Carsten Cramer said. That is why they decided to start from the bottom division of German football and grow organically, instead of buying or merging with an already existing team.
