Centre Backs: Emre Can, Mats Hummels, Manuel Akanji

With only two natural centre backs fit, both Mats Hummels and Manuel Akanji will slide right into the starting XI for the foreseeable future as Zagadou recovers from his knee injury. Hummels was one of Dortmund’s best players last season and will look to pick up right where he left off leading the Dortmund back line from his quarterback role. Akanji had a difficult season, but will be hoping for a fresh start this year.

Emre Can joins the duo in the back three, and will be hoping to improve on his poor pre-season performances. With Borussia Dortmund set to have the majority of the ball, the German international will be looking to join the attack whenever possible.
