Emre Can (6/10)

Playing on the right side of the back three, Can wasn’t troubled as much as Gladbach coach Marco Rose would have wanted. He had a few wobbly moments early on, but improved as the game went on. The German international was always looking to venture forward, and played in a good low cross in the second half, although it was parried away by Yann Sommer.

Mats Hummels (7/10)

Hummels was a rock at the back for Borussia Dortmund, making several important clearances and tackles for his side. No matter what Gladbach threw at him, Hummels dealt with it relatively comfortably. He also made some dangerous forward passes and had a pass success rate of 90%.

Gladbach players wanted a penalty when Hummels challenged Marcus Thuram inside the box when the score was 2-0. The referee said no penalty, and it was probably the right decision despite the crunching challenge made by the Dortmund vice-captain.

Manuel Akanji (6.5/10)

Akanji was booked early on, but did not let that affect his performance too much. The Swiss centre-back looked solid defensively, and made three vital interceptions for his side. Some of his passing and decision making looked casual and sloppy. But for the most past, it was a decent performance by the oft-criticised defender.
