Borussia Dortmund are looking to extend 17 year old Gio Reyna’s contract even further than initially planned, after he took significant steps forward in the past year.

Gio Reyna notched the first Bundesliga goal of his career and Borussia Dortmund’s first goal of the season against Gladbach on Saturday. He spoke before the season about his desire to score and create more goals in the coming season and he started off on the right foot. Reyna has gone from a promising youngster to a viable option in the starting XI week in week out for Lucien Favre and Borussia Dortmund.

Starting the season without Marco Reus, Reyna was thrust into maybe a slightly bigger role than he otherwise would have. He didn’t waste the opportunity, instantly making an impact in the first game putting Dortmund ahead 1-0. Moving forward, even when Reus is fully fit Reyna is a viable option in that number 10 role when the games start coming twice a week.

Gio Reyna’s current contract is set to be extended until 2023 when he turns 18 on November 13th but Sport1 is reporting that Dortmund are planning more than that. Due to the massive progress Reyna has made over the past nine months, Dortmund will not only be looking to extend Reyna’s contract past 2023 but also reward him with significantly higher wages than he was due to receive. That would bring him much more on par with his performances rather than what had been previously agreed upon.

This would be fantastic news for both Reyna and Dortmund. Reyna would see himself properly compensated for his development and Dortmund would tie down one of their most promising youngsters until at least 2023 if not longer.
