Mario Gotze’s name is back in the rumor mill as another shock move to Bayern Munich, this time as a free agent is now being discussed.

Mario Gotze’s second stint at Borussia Dortmund came to an end in the summer of 2020 and the now free agent is yet to find a new club. Gotze has been linked with several teams across Europe this summer but is yet to find a permanent landing spot. It was believed that Gotze would most likely be leaving the Bundesliga to play in Italy or England after spending his entire career in Germany but recent reports suggest that Gotze could have options to stay in Germany.

Although Gotze isn’t the player he used to be, he still has lofty ambitions. Not looking to take a step back, Gotze has made it clear that he still wants to prove he can play at the top level. That means playing in the Champions League, the one trophy that has evaded him thus far in his career, which is where Bayern Munich comes back in.

Sport Bild’s cover on Wednesday is reporting that Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick reached out to Mario Gotze, and it is not the first time the duo have been in touch.

It would be hard to imagine Gotze making a return to Bayern Munich even if there are some reasons it could make sense. After the way he left and how he has performed since, it would take a lot to convince the Bayern higher ups that willingly let him go to their biggest rivals only a few years earlier to bring him back.

The one way that a Gotze return to Bayern would make sense is that he would add depth in central midfield. With Bayern Munich losing Thiago to Liverpool, they are a bit thin depth wise in that area. Gotze doesn’t have the ability to start week in week out for Bayern Munich but the one potential flaw that team does have is depth.

If Gotze were to make his return to Bayern Munich it would be incredibly controversial. Any good faith he regained with the Borussia Dortmund faithful would instantly turn to another round of rage if he went back to their bitter sporting rivals.
