Uninspired Borussia Dortmund handed 2-0 defeat by Augsburg

Borussia Dortmund sleepwalked their way to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat away to Augsburg.
Goals from Felix Uduokhai and Daniel Caligiuri gave Augsburg a comfortable win, as Borussia Dortmund were outclassed and outplayed on what was an afternoon to forget for the Black and Yellows.
Lucien Favre made just one change to the side that cruised to a 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend, with Raphael Guerreiro coming into the team in place of the injured Thorgan Hazard. Borussia Dortmund started the game really well, and had three half chances in the first ten minutes alone, with Jude Bellingham, Axel Witsel and Jadon Sancho all coming close to scoring.
Borussia Dortmund continued to dominate, with some lovely build up play on show. And it looked like it would only be a matter of time before they scored, but Augsburg stood firm to keep them out. Mistakes then started to pop up in the Dortmund defence, with Thomas Meunier’s misplaced back pass nearly resulting in a goal for the home side.
Augsburg finally took advantage with just five minutes to go before half-time as Daniel Caligiuri’s free-kick was headed home by Felix Uduokhai after some sloppy defending by Borussia Dortmund. They managed to hold on to their small cushion going into half-time despite some late pressure from Dortmund.
Daniel Caligiuri doubled Augsburg’s lead just ten minutes after the break after being played in behind by Michael Gregoritsch. Borussia Dortmund looked uninspired and lacked imagination with the hosts happy to sit back and defend their two goal lead. Lucien Favre brought on the likes of Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Reinier Jesus, but they too were unable to inspire the team to mount a comeback.
Borussia Dortmund had a few chances to get back into the game, but Rafał Gikiewicz stood firm between the sticks to keep a hard earned clean sheet for his side.
The game ended 2-0 in Augsburg’s favour, with Borussia Dortmund suffering their first defeat of the new season. Problems which have been plaguing Lucien Favre’s side for each of the last two seasons were once again on show today. Despite having more than 70% of the ball, they never really looked like scoring as Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho had a quiet game.
Borussia Dortmund will be in action once again in four days’ time, as they go up against Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup.
