New season, same old mistakes

Borussia Dortmund relapsed into their old patterns in the defeat to Augsburg. Much like we have seen in the last two seasons, the Black and Yellows clearly underestimated their opponents as they lost an easily winnable game. They made an excellent start but fell flat very quickly, and then simply ran out of ideas by the end, giving Augsburg a relatively comfortable win.

Dortmund simply could not cope with Augsburg’s physicality and never really looked like scoring after conceding the opening goal. They just seemed to be going through the motions for most of the second half, and there was no intensity or urgency to score up until the 80th minute. The attitude seemed to be completely wrong and Borussia Dortmund simply could not assert themselves in the game.

Dortmund’s attack lacked any spark, as Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland had an off day. While Gio Reyna showed that he is not ready to be a starter yet. Despite the attacking quality on show, the final pass or cross was woeful and sloppy more often than not.

Glaring defensive lapses and errors allowed Augsburg to carve open Borussia Dortmund’s defence on multiple occasions. And a better team would have put even more goals past Roman Bürki. Borussia Dortmund’s performance was reminiscent to their 3-1 defeat to Union Berlin on the third matchday of last season.

Augsburg just wanted it more, and Borussia Dortmund were made to rue mistakes that we have seen far too often in the Lucien Favre era.
