Borussia Dortmund were unlucky losers in their 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the German Supercup on Wednesday, with Joshua Kimmich scoring a late goal.

Borussia Dortmund lost the first “trophy” of the season up for grabs to Bayern Munich, falling 3-2 in a tightly contested game. Dortmund did enough to win this game but with the injuries and some early substitutions to key players for rotation, they just didn’t have enough to get the win. Even though Dortmund, lost it was a far better showing at the Allianz Arena than they have had in recent years, which is at least one big positive to take from the game.

Borussia Dortmund fell behind early in this one giving up a poor counter attack off a corner. Felix Passlack and a charging Marco Reus were hung out to dry trying to catch up to the three Bayern attackers. Corentin Tolisso was the Bayern player who got on the end of the ball, with Robert Lewandowski finding him on an easy through ball from out wide. Marwin Hitz actually did well to make the initial save, but the rebound after hitting the post fell to Tolisso poke into the net. Bayern then doubled their lead before half with Thomas Müller beating Felix Passlack to a header inside the box.

Julian Brandt was able to take advantage of a Bayern mistake not too long after, blasting a shot past Neuer in the 39th minute to bring Borussia Dortmund back within one before the half. Not long after the start of the second half, Thomas Delaney found Erling Haaland on a clever through ball, and the striker made no mistake in a 1v1 with Manuel Neuer to level the game.

Manuel Akanji actually created both of the turnovers that led to Borussia Dortmund’s two goals, with an impressive performance. Thomas Meunier had a horrific attempt on a breakaway early in the second half that could have put Dortmund level, but his wayward shot went harmlessly over the bar. Erling Haaland also went clean through again, but Neuer was able to get the better of him the second time. If Dortmund had put away one of those two exceptional chances, they would have likely won this game.

Joshua Kimmich grabbed a late winner on another Dortmund turnover that led to an easy counter attack. Once again, Marwin Hitz made the initial save but the rebound spilled right back to a falling Kimmich who was able to somehow deflect it over Hitz on the way down.
