Haaland and Reyna lead the way as Borussia Dortmund thrash Freiburg 4-0
Borussia Dortmund got back to winning ways with a four goal win against Freiburg, courtesy of goals from Erling Haaland, Emre Can and Felix Passlack.
Borussia Dortmund left no doubt in their win against Freiburg on Saturday, putting four goals past them en route to collecting three points. Dortmund got a much needed win after back to back losses to Augsburg in the Bundesliga and Bayern in the Supercup. Key players Jadon Sancho and Roman Burki missed out on this game due to illness but Dortmund were able to prevail without them.
Borussia Dortmund started the game off very slowly in this one, unable to create much through the opening 30 minutes despite dominating possession. It took a turnover forced by Marco Reus on a high press that freed up Gio Reyna to find Erling Haaland, who as usual made no mistake to find the target.
Dortmund came out of the break on the front foot, taking only two minutes to find the back of the net. Gio Reyna found Emre Can off a corner for his second assist of the game. The Black and Yellows don’t score off corners too often so this was a very rare occurrence, but it was a perfect cross met by a perfect header.
Dortmund carried most of the play in this game but it wasn’t until the 66th minute that Erling Haaland added his second of the game. Reyna once again was at the ready to take advantage of a Freiburg turnover. He and Haaland made the most of the ensuing two on two, and the latter broke through the back line for Reyna to find him before finishing it off.
Felix Passlack was the final scorer on the day on a blistering late counter attack. After Julian Brandt played in Haaland, he took the completely unselfish route in the situation and could have easily took his chance for his hat-trick, but laid it off for an easy finish for Passlack.
Marco Reus also made his first start in the Bundesliga in quite some time which was a welcome sight for Borussia Dortmund fans. It was important for Lucien Favre’s side to get a win before heading to the international break. Once they return the games will come fast, going up to two games a week nearly every week.
