Outgoing Transfers

Leonardo Balerdi (Loan – Marseille), Dzenis Burnic (€500,000 – Heidenheim), Sergio Gomez (Loan – Huesca), Mario Götze (End of Contract), Achraf Hakimi (End of Loan – Real Madrid), Eric Oelschlägel (FC Utrecht – End of Contract), Andre Schürrle (Mutual Termination), Immanuel Pherai (Loan – PEC Zwolle), Marius Wolf (Loan, FC Köln)

Borussia Dortmund did a great job of getting some big earners off of their wage bill this summer. Mario Götze was let go on a free transfer after his contract expired. While Andre Schürrle’s contract was terminated after another failed loan spell, and he made the decision to retire from professional football.

The only big loss the Black and Yellows suffered this summer was that of former Real Madrid loanee Achraf Hakimi. Despite his inconsistencies in defence, Hakimi is one of the world’s best wing-backs going forward. And his output will certainly be missed this season. Hopefully, his loss will be offset by the development of Mateu Morey. But other than Hakimi, Dortmund were able to keep hold of all their key players, which will give the team some much needed continuity.

Borussia Dortmund also sent the likes of Leonardo Balerdi, Marius Wolf, Sergio Gomez and Immanuel Pherai out on loan, and the quartet’s long term futures seemingly lie away from the Westfalenstadion.

Final Thoughts

Borussia Dortmund look to be well stocked in almost every department (barring centre-back), and should have enough depth to cope with the packed schedule that awaits them in the coming months. In an ideal world, they would have signed a new centre-back and possibly a better replacement for Achraf Hakimi, but with the resources at their disposal, those in charge did a great job of strengthening the squad during this challenging period.

This season will be a big challenge for Lucien Favre’s side, with games coming in thick and fast. But as long as they can avoid injuries to key players, and if the youthful squad can remain hungry and consistent throughout, the Black and Yellows look set for a very successful season. And if they do manage to win a trophy at the end of this season, they will without a doubt have Michael Zorc to thank first and foremost.
