Mario Götze has joined Dutch side PSV Eindhoven after leaving Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer.

Borussia Dortmund parted ways with Mario Götze at the end of last season after his contract expired. Now the free agent is on his way to the Netherlands, and will be joining PSV Eindhoven. The 28 year old had his medical check and signed a two year deal with the Dutch side ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for Europa League registration.

Götze will be aiming for a fresh start with PSV after enduring a difficult end to his second stint at Borussia Dortmund. The attacking midfielder turned false nine was limited to 21 appearances last season, spending just 609 minutes on the pitch. He scored three goals and provided one assist.

After Borussia Dortmund decided not to extend his contract, Götze was linked with a number of clubs, including AC Milan, Fiorentina, AS Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, and most recently Hertha Berlin. But now he has joined PSV, where he will team up with a number of former Bundesliga players, including Philipp Max, Timo Baumgartl and Adrian Fein.

PSV Eindhoven are currently coached by former Bayer Leverkusen head coach Roger Schmidt, who was linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2018 when Peter Bosz was sacked, and also last season when Lucien Favre’s future came into question.
