Borussia Dortmund were made to pay for their sloppy defending as they began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Lazio.

Former Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile capitalised on Thomas Meunier’s early mistake to give Lazio the lead in just the sixth minute. An own goal from Marwin Hitz then helped the Italian side double their advantage half way through the first half.

Erling Haaland pulled a goal back for Borussia Dortmund in the 71st minute. But any hopes of a potential comeback were dashed quickly as Lazio substitute Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro turned in Lazio’s third to seal the victory.

Borussia Dortmund had enough chances, especially in the first half, to get something out of the game. But failure to convert those opportunities, combined with defensive lapses proved to be costly, and ensured defeat in the opening game of the Champions League group stage.

Here are our player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players from their 3-1 loss to Lazio.

Marwin Hitz (6/10)

Hitz stood no chance with the opening goal, and was unlucky that Luiz Felipe’s header went into the net after a deflection off of him. He made a couple of decent saves, and his only error came in the second half, but he did well to follow up and ensure that it didn’t cost his side.
