Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League campaign kicked off with a disappointing 3-1 loss in Rome to SS Lazio.

An early goal from former Borussia Dortmund player Ciro Immobile dictated the tempo of the match for Lazio and Lucien Favre’s side were never able to recover from it. A Marwin Hitz own goal from a corner put Lazio up 2-0 in the 23rd minute to make matters worse.

While Borussia Dortmund out shot their opponents and dominated possession with 65% of the ball, Lazio looked the bigger threat going forward and always looked dangerous on the counter attack.

Borussia Dortmund came out better in the second half, and an Erling Haaland goal gave them some hope. Unfortunately it was short lived, and Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro restored Lazio’s two goal lead within five minutes, and the match ended 3-1 in the home side’s favour

Here are three takeaways from the Champions League loss.
