Thomas Meunier (6.5/10)

After a string of bad performances, Meunier looked solid today and made some important defensive contributions. He also had a decent game going forward, although he probably should have done better with his excellent first half chance. It was an encouraging performance by the oft-criticised right-back, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Manuel Akanji (7.5/10)

Akanji made his return to the team after beating COVID-19. And he played a crucial role in helping his side beat Schalke. The Swiss centre-back was solid defensively and showed great awareness to follow through and find the bottom corner on the rebound after Raphael Guerreiro’s shot was blocked. The goal came at the perfect time for Dortmund and allowed them to cruise to victory in the end.

Mats Hummels (7.5/10)

Hummels had another good game and stifled a number of Schalke counter-attacks before they could become dangerous. He spent a lot of time conducting Dortmund’s attacking play from the back and was largely effective as he so often is. The 31 year old then sealed the three points by making it 3-0 with a thumping header from a corner.

Raphael Guerreiro (8.5/10)

Guerreiro showed once again today why he is up there with the best left backs in world football with a superb performance on both ends of the pitch. He was involved in almost all of Borussia Dortmund’s attacking moves as Schalke afforded him with a lot of space on the left wing and centrally. He caused Schalke defenders a whole lot of problems with his dribbling and link up play.

The Portuguese international played a game high 120 passes and created a number of good chances for his teammates. He played a key part in two of the three goals, and although Guerreiro’s stats will only show one assist, his overall performance was nothing short of world class.
